He wasn’t lying.
The Philadelphia Eagles have confirmed a 5 year deal with Nnamdi Asomuga, the top free agent on the market. The deal is rumored to be worth $60 million dollars, according to ESPN. If the report is true, the Eagles will pay a little over $12 million dollars for what many consider to be the best cornerback in the NFL.
Asomugha had reportedly been close to signing with the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys, but it appears that the Eagles swept in last minute to keep him from their division rival.
“Asomguha is a great player,” said Roseman. “His height combined with his length allow him to play any kind of coverage, including press coverage.”
Asomugha is expected to be at Lehigh at some point tomorrow, but will not practice.
This means the Eagles now have Asante Samuel, Asomugha, and Dominique Rodgers Cromartie all on the roster. Without question, that gives them the best cornerback trio in the league.
The question becomes, how long will Samuels be here?
Asante Samuel has not been at training camp, after being excused for “personal reasons”. Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer has reported that the Eagles say he is still under contract, and is still excused. McLane also reports that the Eagles have not traded Samuel.
If the Eagles do keep Samuel, it could be a career year for him if he keeps the right attitude. Asomugha does not get thrown at often, meaning plenty of forced balls will be coming Samuels way. If their is one thing Samuel is the best in the league at, it is jumping a route and making a play on the ball.
More details to come as they emerge.
